There are historic cities throughout the country that aren’t just good for history buffs to visit. Many people believe that some of the country’s most historic cities are also some of the most haunted places in America. If you’re in search of a Halloween-focused RVing adventure, check out some of the top haunted places to visit!

A Family-Friendly Focus for Visiting Haunted Places

Many people choose to hop into their RV with the whole family, which means that any Halloween RVing destination must be family-friendly. When planning any family adventure, make sure that the destinations you’re choosing aren’t too intense for the youngest members of your family.

We’re taking a look at popular haunted places that, though spooky, don’t need to be downright scary for little ones. Many of these destinations have rich histories that can make them both educational and exciting. If you’re looking for some reportedly haunted places to drive to, start with these popular historic and haunted places.

Jerome, Arizona

Located in central Arizona, Jerome was a bustling mining town that was once the third-largest city in Arizona. In the 1920s, Jerome was the state’s largest producer of precious metals including gold, copper, and silver. When the mines dried up, the town’s population dwindled and by 1953 it was the largest ghost town in the west.

Following several revitalization efforts and a 1967 designation as a National Historic Landmark, Jerome is now home to many family-friendly attractions and a bustling artist community. There are also several wineries around the town, making Jerome a popular day trip from Phoenix.

Of course, if you’re in search of haunted places in Jerome, there are still many opportunities for some spooky sightseeing. There are multiple ghost tour companies that offer walking tours of the town’s most haunted spots. Haunted places in Jermone include the Connor Hotel, Jerome Grand Hotel, and the old jail.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah’s recorded history dates all the way back to 1733 when the city was the first of this American Colony. The city has undergone many changes since its founding, with The American Revolution, Civil War, and other historic periods creating an ever-changing Savannah.

Today, Savannah is known for its historic district, ironwork accents on buildings, Southern hospitality, Girl Scouts history, beautiful oak trees, and its legends of haunted areas throughout the city. It’s home to old buildings that are still standing today, many of which go back to the 1700s and 1800s. With so much history in many of these buildings, it’s no surprise that Savannah is considered one of the most haunted places in America.

Ghosts are reported to reside in buildings all around Savannah, some friendlier than others. Some of the most haunted spots include The Pirates’ House, a restaurant and bar that’s over 250 years old. Ghosts have reportedly been seen around the restaurant late at night.

Other haunted Savannah places include The Hamilton-Turner Inn, where there have been alleged sightings of a cigar-smoking man sitting on the roof of the building. Moon River Brewing Company is another reportedly haunted Savannah spot, with ghost sightings happening in the building’s basement and topmost floors. St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine is America’s oldest continuously occupied city, dating all the way back to 1565. The city’s most popular destinations include The Fountain of Youth, The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, the Old Jail, and the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse.

Many of the city’s most popular attractions are also some of the most haunted places in Florida. The Old Jail is known for being haunted, with many ghost sightings over the years. The Castillo de San Marcos Fort is also believed to be haunted, with visitors saying they’ve seen ghosts and orbs both inside and outside the fort.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is famous for Mardi Gras, Creole cuisine, jazz, unique architecture, and voodoo. Many of its claims to fame are also why New Orleans is considered to be one of the most haunted cities in America. New Orleans is a beautiful city to visit for its rich culture, history, and delicious cuisine.

If you’re looking for something on the spookier side, be sure to visit the city’s reportedly haunted spots including Faulkner House Books, a bookstore that is reportedly haunted by its namesake author. Other spots visited by famous spirits include Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo, where visitors report feeling the presence of spirits in this famous spot.

Other haunted places in New Orleans include Antoine’s Restaurant, where visitors have reportedly seen multiple spirits. There are also several historic hotels throughout New Orleans that are believed to be haunted.

Salem, Massachusetts

Salem is a Northeast city famous for its Witch Trials, along with earning more recent recognition as a filming location for 1993’s Hocus Pocus. The city is most famous for its Witch Trials sights and haunted places. Some of the most haunted places in Salem include The Burying Point Cemetery, where many ghosts are believed to roam. The Witch House, which was home to Judge Jonathan Corwin, is also believed to be haunted. Visitors to the house, which is now a museum, have reported encountering seemingly random cold spots throughout the home, and even sensations of someone being in the room with them.

Haunted Places in Texas

Texas is home to famously weird roadside attractions, Americana destinations, and many sights for the whole family to enjoy. Not to worry, there are also many haunted and spooky sights to see throughout The Lone Star State. Some of our favorite reportedly haunted places in Texas include:

  • Marfa, where people have reported seeing unexplained orbs of light that are often red, blue, or white.
  • The Alamo in San Antonio, where ghosts from the casualties of the site’s famous battle are believed to still haunt the site.
  • Terlingua Ghost Town, which many believe to be haunted by residents of the former mine town.
  • USS Lexington in Corpus Christi, where visitors report seeing many ghosts throughout the ship.
