1. Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, Teller County
Take a step back to the days of prehistoric Colorado at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Millions of years ago, the area was a lively ecosystem centered on Florissant Lake. When a nearby volcano erupted, many species were wiped out and fossilized in the sediment. During your visit, be sure to strap on your hiking boots and explore the Petrified Forest Trail Loop, a one-mile trail where you can see the petrified remains of the once giant redwoods that dominated the area.
2. Maroon Bells, Aspen
Maroon Bells is the ideal RV vacation for lovers of the outdoors. At more than 14,000 feet above sea level, the twin peaks provide the perfect setting for RV camping, hiking, and wildlife watching. With its awe-inspiring scenery, vistas, and wildflower-dotted slopes, Maroon Bells is one of Colorado’s most photographed areas.
If you’re into fly fishing, check out the serene Maroon Lake. There are also vast stretches of open wildflower fields perfect for a barefoot stroll, a picnic, or cloud-gazing.
3. Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs
Designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1971, the Garden of the Gods is a public park with some of the most astounding natural geological formations you will ever see. One of its most notable sights is the Balanced Rock, a 700-ton red sandstone standing, seemingly precariously, on one corner.
4. Denver Zoo, Denver
Not all RV travel ideas involve trekking into the wilderness. The Denver Zoo is a great destination if you’re looking to make a stop into the city, or have children in tow. With so many animals to see, like African black-footed penguins and Arctic foxes, the Zoo makes for a perfect day trip.
5. Pearl Street Mall, Boulder
For the city dweller, the Pearl Street Mall provides an unmissable urban shopping experience. Encompassing four blocks, Pearl Street is home to a number of local businesses, and is also a favorite weekend destination for students from the nearby University of Colorado Boulder. The mall is especially popular during the summer months when the sidewalks are full of street performers showcasing their talent. Planning on making a trip this spring? You’ll be just in time to see the beautiful tulip banks that dot the plaza in bloom.
